Chanel Joan Elkayam LFW Triumph
If you haven’t heard of Chanel Joan Elkayam, you should have. The youngest designer to show at both New York and Paris Fashion weeks and the recipient of New York’s Designer of the Year Award at the tender age of 19, this girl is gonna be HUGE.
Currently honing her craft at Central Saint Martins, the notable alumni of which include the British Design Heavyweights; Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, John Galliano and Christopher Kane, there is no doubt that the appropriately named Chanel is about to go Stellar.
I was, therefore delighted to get a front row seat at her London Fashion Week A/W 2017 collection “La Sola Rosa” at Hoxton Arches, as I knew, as a Fashion Industry insider, that this show was one to watch.
Inspired by the Nurse, Writer, Poet, Feminist & Pacifist, Vera Britain, whose novel; Testament of Youth, recounts her experience of heartbreak and loss during WW1. This collection and its name was an homage to Vera, whose Fiancé, Roland, presented her with a red rose at their last meeting and each model carried a red rose as they made their way down the runway.
The show started with a beautifully haunting dance by the insanely talented Ballerina, Kiyono Seira and this set the tone for the rest of the show, the models were melancholic in mood as they showcased the sensual, raw and emotional collection. The hair and make up was en pointe with a sophisticated, timeless elegant look.
My personal favourite piece from the collection was this red dress (image), which I later learned was hand draped on the mannequin at home by Chanel herself. I actually gasped when I saw it, it is exquisite in its beauty yet infinitely wearable, I will be buying a CJE piece sooner rather than later as I predict that they their value will soar along with her visibility over the next few seasons…
